I have noticed in the past that there has been criticism of URL Access Scripting and various curl scripts seem to be preferred. Can anyone give me reasons for this?

As Tim says, URLAS has never been reliable for me. It just hangs in a variety of circumstances. If you choose to script URLAS, my advice would be to trap the timeout errors and when you get one you force-quit (with the "kill" utility) URLAS then you relaunch it to resume the task.
