That *is* vanilla AppleScript. ;)

You're really asking if there's another program besides diskutil that will do it, aren't you? Ideally the Finder?

I guess that it's a matter of nomenclature. I don't consider shell scripts to be vanilla Applescript. It's a completely different scripting language that's called by an Applescript in this case.
