Have you used theĀ JS Listener Plugin?
Some things, like the use of certain plugins, can be done only with _javascript_ and not with AS. I suggest running the JS listener Plugin and looking at the log with console to see if an entry is made when you manually save with that plugin. If that doesn't work it looks like you've got the best solution possible... Unless you want to try using actions but actions are just messy.
