Importing files into iTunes

A simple question, or so I think.

I want to import a number of files, stored on a removable disk, into iTunes. This works well, when the user has selected the 'copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to the library' setting. If this option isn't selected, the files on the removable drive are only referenced, not copied.

I was hoping that I could specify 'copy' when adding to the library, but I can't find that option.

I then searched the iTunes dictionary, hoping to find a way to detect the 'copy to music folder' setting. I couldn't find that either.

Now the way forward seems to be:
- copy all files to a 'safe location' on the user's hard drive
- import the files into iTunes
- compare the paths of the resulting iTunes tracks with the imported files, and delete the originals if the paths are different.

Before I implement all of this: is this the right approach?
