The rule that seems to work for me with FileMaker 8 is that you should use the following hierarchy when using the visual capabilities of FileMaker (i.e. actually changing what's shown on the screen):


Application > Document > Window > Layout

Window is really important as now you can have multiple windows open with the same database/document/layout/table shown.



If you don't want to affect the visual layout then use the hierarchy:

Application > Database > Table


Note that some things just don't work with the second alternative, as far as I can tell.
