So, supposedly, you can't set the style of a replacement to any custom
styles, only to one of the 102 enumerated built-in styles of 'base style'.
(BTW, applying FOOT_REF style manually afterwards removes the bold and
re-applies the superscript since you set the superscript property of
FOOT_REF to true and didn't set the bold property. Why'd you do that?)

Thanks so much Paul! I made a little adjustment and it works like a charm.

Why'd I do that?

I have a client who sends in their copy with superscripts but refuses to use style sheets. I'm importing into InDesign with Applescript and then applying paragraph styles. It appears that if the superscript style is applied on its own, the local formatting is overridden and I lose the footnote references--but, if the Character style (which is only applying superscript) is applied to those same characters, then the local formatting holds and when my paragraph style is applied, the footnote references are kept but appear in the correct font for the paragraph.

The lines in the script referencing Bold were simply there to test that, in fact, my find/change was working.

You were just the person that I thought of when I decided to post last night--thanks again!
