Not a correct assumption.
A layout may "contain" many databases and tables from databases. Portals
and relationships provide robust mechanisms for displaying data from
multiple sources on one layout.
To which one are you speaking? How should AS / FM know this? The answer
lies in the new object model (which is included in the documentation which
you argue against reading.)
I think you really may want to re-think Malcolm's charitable advice and
re-read the provided documentation for scripting FM.
Whether or not it is true that the AS reference material previously cited
has changed much or not over time is completely irrelevant. It may have
only changed minimally, but those changes are critical. FM now has whole
new capabilities (i.e., multiple tables in one file) which require learning
a whole new scripted object model.
I will grant you the fact that this AS documentation for FM looks terrible,
and does not really take advantage of more recent FM interface options [it
is essentially the same file, with the same FM 4-era interface, that has
always shipped, but the information about the object model is very new and
very important -- as you have seen.]

Well, it's documented. :)
