No need to apologize; I now understand that it's a cultural
difference. But wasn't just you who did it. Now that I think of
it, the other person who does it is also European. I just never
encountered it before on this--or any other--list.
It's my french habit to name people which I don't really know
using their full name.
Here, I am always surprised when people I don't know call me Yvan ;-)

Many young french beeings took english habits but I am a 63 years
old one with old habits.
You are "lucky".
At first I typed "Mrs Michelle Steiner" and deleted "Mrs" thinking it
was a bit too formal.
To be precise, I am "surprised" when I am called "Yvan" but I doesn't
feel that offending.
