Yes, indeed, an elegant solution to the problem at hand.
but out of curiosity are you running your script while having
iTunes play?
No. I wasn't.
The audio files were Apple Lossless - so maybe this was causing some
extra overhead while iTunes was doing some processing of its own?
I have also set the preferences to NOT copy files to iTunes when
importing.
