Is it possible to convert styled text into some more useful format?

In my dictionary "useful" mean some text based format like XML, markdown, restructured text, latex, or in some text based format that can be manipulated further.

I'm afraid there is no such thing, and it's a pity. Except maybe AppleWorks is able to import styled text and save it as rtf? Which is borderline with respect to your "useful" ness.
