Still shouldn't be that painful. Do you know that you can drag into a
collapsed folder? It will expand so you can descend into contained
folders (which may also be collapsed, etc)... So you only need the top
level of the hierarchy visible to drag a message into any folder you
have.
Personally, I move all my messages into a single folder called "Filed"
and use search to find old messages as needed, but that's just me.
