No you don't; the rule will select that for you.

Right, and you need to do that only once for each list.
If I want to remove the list from Mail completely I need to remove
the folder and then remove the rule.
True. But how often do you subscribe and unsubscribe to lists?
Except for when I first ran mail.app, I've added or deleted lists only
once or twice a year.

Well, for one thing you haven't assigned a variable to this. You need
something like this:
on perform mail action with messages the_messages
Without that change, nothing will work.
