I think John Clayton hits the nail on the head. The difficulty of AppleScript lies in it's flexible syntax. However, within the flexible syntax also lies the power of AppleScript. If we look back to the earlier promotion of AppleScript we see that Apple advertised it's new language that something everybody can use. In other words, 'Yes, you too can program! It's not just for eggheads'. The advent of AppleScript can be compared to the story of Prometheus stealing fire from the Gods and giving it to man. Of course, for the crime of that theft Prometheus is chained to a rock and his liver is eaten daily by an eagle for the rest of eternity. Fortunately, Apple doesn't have to endure such torture but will likely hear the cries of people complaining about AppleScript's loose syntax for as long as Prometheus must witness the return of the eagle.
Yes, AppleScript is pretty dang crazy, but look at what we've been able to do with it. AppleScript has been the 'starter drug' for many programmers. It is an excellent launching pad for people to learn other 'more serious' languages and even to implement OPP strategies within AS at their own pace.
Cheers!
