I really do think it's silly, though. I don't much care where my
software comes from, as long as it does what I want. For my money, my
iMac came with way too much stuff that I don't need preinstalled, just
wasting disk space. But Apple's hardly unique in that respect;
off-the-shelf PC's are the same way, and usually worse because of the
number of parties involved in their production.
IMO, Apple's job is to provide me with a great-looking environment
that's also a platform for software that does what I need. If they
want to also supply some of that software themselves, great - I use
iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie HD . . . But I think it's unreasonable to
insist that their stuff be the best available. They may know the
platform best, but they're still only one company, and there are a lot
of talented software developers out there. I use Firefox instead of
Safari, Adium instead of iChat, iTerm instead of Terminal, OpenOffice
instead of iWork. Needing a third-party add-on for a particular type
of software development is hardly a dealbreaker.
I generally agree with your viewpoint. The degree to which I agree,
however, depends on the scope and prevalence of the software. For
example, the scope of AppleScript is much more closely associated
with the OS (somewhat, e.g. sh and unix) than an application like
iChat (not at all). Therefore, I have higher expectations. On the
other hand instant messaging is so ubiquitous that I expect iChat
to be a more general solution. How useful would Safari be if it
didn't support HTTPS, DOM or Flash? Some things you just expect,
and when they're not to be found it's irksome.
Having said that, the part of my message you quoted was just a
preamble to what I thought would be a humorous post. I didn't
intend for it to be dissected; it should have been taken as a
whole to be appreciated. Apparently, nobody thought it was as
funny as I did. And I really did.
Silly me.
