What's all this stuff about "bundles"

Searching Script Editor's help, I can find nothing about the "save as script bundle" and "save as application bundle" options, or about the "Bundle Contents" icon in the upper-right corner of the script editing window.
Could someone point me to an explanation of these things? My understanding is that a bundle is basically a folder that doesn't get a folder icon, right?
How would I add stuff to a script bundle or an app bundle? What kind of stuff might I add, and why, and how would I access it from the main script?
Maybe Apple has a tech note on this? Any help appreciated. _______________________________________________
