Rich text to ... something else. And vice versa

I've been trying to figure out if there is some way I can:

+ Convert rich text including pictures to some text based
    format

+ Convert plain text to rich text and insert pictures etc.

I'm using an application that uses rich text to store information, this information can contain pictures, urls etc. I would like to be able to convert this info to some text based format like Markdown, HTML, etc.

I would also like to create rich text info from some kind of script being able to insert pictures, links etc.

So far I've played with the text suite but didn't succeed, setting and reading font size/style etc works but I don't really understand how I should handle urls, pictures, etc.

In addition to good applescript support I can also export the info as RTFD and Web Archives, it can import RTFD.

What is the easiest way to convert the info to/from rich text? My goal is to be able to convert from/to markdown (with pictures as jpgs).

                            jem
