Jan,

sorry, I've had constructed my groups in another way.
And I've made the approach via selection/entire group.
This combination led me to a "solution" which doesn't
gives a correct result for every construct.

This script should work:
---
tell document 1 of application "QuarkXPress Passport"
  set nPicBox to count (every picture box whose selected is true)
end tell
---
