Well, partly. The other reason is that some of the function of the phone depends on the network providing the back end support (visual voice mail). I'm sure Steve doesn't want his new toy used on networks that would error out on any function.

Unless they are out to screw you, the iPhone plan should be cheaper by a large measure than the plans the have to recover the cost of the phone.
But it'll be like the iPod. Early adopters pay the big $. Capacity will go up and price will drop over time. Too bad I didn't want a phone. They really are a piece of technological brilliance. But it's the last thing I need. I had a cell for about 3 years. One time had two. After I was no longer self-employed I got rid of them. Bloody nuisance. I even got rid of the answering machine at home and voice mail at work. Now I only hear from people when it matters.
