I haven't participated a lot in this list for the last couple of years (until the recent bit of activity) largely due to limits on my own time (80-90 hour a week job and four young children), but I've never scolded someone for not trying hard enough. However, I have, and will continue to take a pass on replying to posts from people who show no attempt to do anything, and just ask for someone to provide a script. This list isn't supposed to be a script service bureau. Help yes; provide complete solutions, no. I think I recently did reply to someone who asked such a thing and did say they should at least try something first.
YES! I'll help any newbie posting code that is easily fixed, although I'll ignore anyone asking for scripts.
I don't think the list is in as bad a state as you do. And I think the best way for it to improve would be for Apple to start doing it right as concerns AppleScript. Even if they did do that (and I don't expect it to happen), there will still be shell solutions that are better. And that's not a problem.
Neither do I, I don't encourage books mainly because I'm too stoopid for books myself, and find sample code more valuable. I've had such amazing support from this list whenever I can give back and help someone, newbie or otherwise I try and reply with my best idea for a solution.
We may debate among ourselves on the list from time to time, but I still think newbies get all the help they need to both get their stuff done, and to get motivated to learn more.
So do I.
Time to fire up the barbecue and break out the beer.
OK...? bit early here but I'm up.. :P
