Indeed.  The specific command I'd use is:

> sudo
> /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/
> LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -f -dump -domain
> local -domain system -domain user

Note that should all be one line.  I put it in a .command file once to
make it easier to run, as I used to have regular LS corruption problems
before Tiger.  You can grab it here, if you don't like typing:

Blowing away your ~/Library/Caches folder with a utility also resets the
LaunchServices cache, but doesn't go back and re-register applications
for you.
