Immediately after my last post, I deleted the mailbox "TEST" only to find that it did not disappear, but turned grey. I'm not sure why, but I think its an indication that the messages in "TEST" have been deleted, but not the sub-mailbox. A grey mailbox also indicates that the mailbox can no longer accept messages. I think your conclusion, below, is correct.

I just went to Mail Help and read "Why is my mailbox gray?". Not sure it explains anything.

I get a mailbox in Mail that is called "Import" (with a grey icon) and a mailbox within called "ylan" (with a blue icon) that contains the imported messages. So far, so good. I can know process the messages inside the "ylan" mailbox.

Mailboxes that have a blue icon are mailboxes that have been created by the user or by Mail for use by the user. All other mailboxes are those with grey icons or with special icons and are created by Mail for some special use only by Mail. (Inbox, Outbox, Junk, Sent, Trash and account mailboxes).

Indeed. The mailbox in question was created by Mail while performing an import operation. However, this one I can delete manually, which you can't do for the ones you mentioned.

There is a more technical explanation whose details I don't completely recall at the moment, but if you look at the folder structure within the ./Users/<username>/Library/Mail/ folder, you will certainly see these details.

Yes, as I mentioned, the difference between the gray mailbox and every other blue one is that under ./Users/<username>/Library/Mail/ Mailboxes it's the only one who's folder name doesn't have a ".mbox" ending.
