Create application with this script:

display dialog "Whatever"

Double click app in Finder.

Result: nothing

Works fo me too, here (Intel box with 10.4.11).

When saving a script as an application, there are two formats available
in the "Save as..." dialog.
Have you tried both?

I see the applet pop up in Activity Monitor and go away. But nothing happens.

As I mentioned, works fine in Leopard.
