In 10.5.1 I get the correct result using a custom date format
date "January 1, 2000 0:00:00"

It happens with any date from Jan 1, 1000 to Dec 31, 1099. The "date

Hmmm, this may not be confined to AppleScript and may not be confined to
those date ranges.

Well, it doesn't happen in the year 999 or the year 1100. I tried a few other dates at random, and got the right answers.

I just got a hard copy proof from an Excel document that had date fields off
by six days, while the day of week was correct.

Interesting. What was the formula? I'll see whether I can reproduce it in Numbers.
