I just tried this. The 'display alert ...' appears only briefly. Whatever is causing this problem must be machine specific. I'm running PPC G4 with OS 10.4.10. Or perhaps a preference setting is involved. Either way, it appears to be a bug with 'display alert'. The workaround is to use 'display dialog'.
