A brief follow-up on the OT stuff. Since I did post here, I'll report here.

This sentiment was echoed in a half-dozen private replies. Kudos to the
list members, particularly the lifers.
Also, thanks to those who tried (and did) help out with the iSync app issue.
I elected to re-install the OS from scratch, onto a re-formatted drive.
(Needed anyway, so I bought a decent 320GB drive for just at $100.)

The iSync problem was not solved by any other means. The Sync process works
without problem, but I could not access the isync.app -- it simply throbs,
then crashes.
This was NOT an isync prefs/plist/data problem, but an application launching
problem.

Most suggestions were to re-install iSync by deleting the package receipt so
Software Update would get it. This did not work.
The iSync.app is in the "Essentials.pkg", but removing that receipt did
nothing. No new updates.

Well, it did seem silly, but it turns out that one of my other applications
uses the exact same keyboard shortcut as this toggled feature of 'Full
Keyboard Access' in Universal Access prefs.
The offending (not really) app did its business as planned, but the *other*
shortcut also fired! This kept toggling, back and forth, between 'Tab to
all elements' and 'Tab to text boxes only'.
This seems like a bug, to me. Keyboard shortcuts pass along and have
multiple effects? Hmmm.
Anyway, thanks again for the replies I received -- all kind and generally
useful.
