An insertion point usually refers to the point between any two characters
(or before the first/after the last). So its contents is usually an empty
string, but as long as contents is not read-only you can insert text by
setting the contents to a string. It should not be confused with the
selection.

(At least, that's the case in all apps I've seen it in; I haven't looked at
Pages.)
