Thanks to Chris Nebel for the suggestion to remove nonstock scripting additions. I trashed SatiImage, LNS XML & plist scripting additions and Xmail along with EXIF reader. One of these must have been the cause of the problem, because I am not seeing it now. (sorry I'm too lazy to see which one caused the problem, and none of these are mission critical for me...)
