Welcome Selva,

The introductory document is here:

Hi Selva, welcome to the group!

I don't know that I'd call the AppleScript Language Guide *the* introductory document, though it's definitely something you should be aware of if you're going to be writing AppleScript. The difficulty is that it's mostly written as a language reference, which a lot of people don't do well with as a first lesson. Fortunately, there are a variety of third-party books available with a more tutorial-like style -- try searching Amazon for "AppleScript" to get a quick list.

Also, if your interest is more in automation in general than in AppleScript specifically, you should be aware of the other options available, notably Automator and the various other scripting languages available on Mac OS X (Python, Ruby, Perl, Tcl, etc.), which may be a better fit for you and what you're doing. (Or maybe not. A lot of it is personal taste. And there's nothing wrong with learning more than one. It's generally encouraged, in fact.)
