Is there a way to test which of the volumes with the same prefix is the real one and adjust accordingly, without requiring a shut down or manual intervention? I'm thinking of trying to list the contents of each "duplicate" volume. I assume the dead one would return some kind of error, but what?

If you use the 'diskutil' command on a bum volume it should return a different name:


% diskutil info /Volumes/dummy | grep 'Volume Name:'
   Volume Name:              pickled
