This afternoon, I modified a script that I use to position folder
windows and set all sub-folders of a list view to list view. (It seems
the bounds setting bug has been fixed, so I just removed the work-
around.) I exercised it considerably for the remainder of the
afternoon. I am still encountering folders that should be in list
view, but have reverted to icon view. Or the other way around. The
only way to be certain of the result is to do thousands of manual cmd-
J, clicks.

An experiment ...
Create two new folders on your desktop named "untitled icon" and
"untitled list".
1. Open "untitled icon"; set it to icon view; close it.
2. Open "untitled list"; set it to list view; close it.
3. Open "untitled icon"; Notice that it's reverted to list view; set
it to icon view; close it.
4. Open "untitled list"; Notice that it's reverted to icon view; set
it to list view; close it.
After how many of these steps do you notice that something is wrong.
Yes, I know there's probably a logical explanation, but right now I'm
wearing my Naive-Mac-Users hat.
And how would I explain it to my sisters, who both use Macs, but
hardly understand the difference between RAM and disk.

Try this.

Create a new folder on the desktop. Open it. CMD J, check always open in list
view, change the font size, change the font size back, and click Use as
Defaults. Create two new folders, open one (should open in list view), click on
icon view toolbar button, CMD+J, select always open in icon view, close the
view options windoiw, and close the foider. Open the other new one (should also
open in list view), click on column view toolbar button, CMD+J, select always
open in column view (that's the missing pre-Leopard Finder option), close the
view options windoiw, and close the foider. Now, open all three folders and
they should retain those settings-one in list view, one in icon view, and one
in column view.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I agree! But notice that you got that result by MANUALLY doing CMD+J, then MANUALLY clicking the "Always open ..." check box, then MANUALLY closing the View Options window. And you can't AppleScript that. Now imagine that you have a disk with thousands of folders on it and you want them all to have and retain various view. NRFPT.
