Cropping white space

Is it possible to script removing white space from the sides of photos in
photoshop?

I have a directory with a few thousand images and some have white areas of
varying width within the frame that looks pretty bad when paginated.

So I'm hoping for a way to use appleScript to determine if an image has
these white borders and removing them.
