I donno about OS neXt but in the good old days of classic, applications put multiple copies of the "copied" items on the clipboard. Each was identified with what was then a file type like TEXT or STYL.


It's possible that the software that you are copying from doesn't put the TEXT item on the clipboard and there is nothing to paste in unstyled mode. Have you tried a paste from something simple like the result of a cat command in Terminal.app or perhaps something from TextEdit that might be RTF.
