I am trying to dig into my memory to see if I can remember any script of
mine that broke because of a "tell block problem".
I know for sure that hundreds (probably) of scripts broke when the scripts
were applied to/used with new versions of applications, let's say upgrading
from InDesign CS1 to CS2, or when upgrading from Excel X to 2004 or 2008
etc.
A few broke with system upgrades, the recent ones that spring to mind
because of Mac Roman to Unicode issues. (A few also broke when using
scriptable apps included with the OS, because of terminology change within
that app, but that's just like any app upgrade)
But I can honestly say that I can only remember one single script that
caused me problem because of nested tell blocks / use of standard additions
commands within an app's tell context.
That was, and I may be wrong on the details, when a 'display dialog "foo"
with icon stop' led to a terminology conflict with an InDesign term.
So, while I do understand the theoretical merits of the point Chris has made
I really can't see that it caused me any problem in practice.
I would be interested in hearing if it is a real problem for others, and if
so how frequently does it appear?
