Sadly, kAudioFileUnspecifiedError (the symbolic name for the string
"wht?") means: "An unspecified error has occurred"... :-(

According to that header file, the 'dta?' I encountered with some
other files indicates a kAudioFileInvalidFileError ("The file is
malformed, or otherwise not a valid instance of an audio file of its
type.")
Some of the files that returned this error via afplay were old OS 9
files, so that's not too surprising a result (one was a .wma file with
a file type of "Mp3" , which plays fine in QuickTime Player when
double-clicked), but I also got the 'dta?' error with a newly-
purchased .m4b (a protected MPEG-4 file).
Too bad afplay is so poorly documented.
