I guess I'm out of my depth here.

I experimented with the System sound Glass.aiff, moving a copy to various locations within my home directory, and had no problem playing it either directly from the command line or via do shell script.

I was also able to use afplay to play .mp3 files, but ran into an identical error with some OS 9 Sound Files, and a similar error (Error: ExtAudioFileOpen failed ('dta?') with some other file types.

Information on ExtAudioFileOpen errors is pretty sparse, and I'm not sure I'd understand it even if the three-letter identifiers were defined somewhere findable.

They may be found in this header file:

/System/Library/Frameworks/AudioToolbox.framework/Versions/A/Headers/ AudioFile.h

Sadly, kAudioFileUnspecifiedError (the symbolic name for the string "wht?") means: "An unspecified error has occurred"... :-(
