Applescript "Excessively" Slow in Leopard

If this has already been posted and addressed, please forgive the
repeated question.
Applescript is "incredibly slow" in Leopard. Just simple repeat
scripts going through Finder folders to make changes takes 2 to 3
times longer than in Tiger. And it just seems to be getting slower
with the 10.5.2 update. I have two questions:
(1) Why so slow? - is this an indication that Applescript just hasn't
yet received the attention it needs in these latest builds of 10.5?
(2) Is there any hope for seeing blazingly faster speed for
Applescript in Leopard? If so, how long will we have to wait to see
speeds get reasonable again?
