This was a mess. The template came from her professor and was made on word
on Windows, no idea what version. She's using Word 2008 and I'm using Word
2004.

Since we didn't have time for me to figure out Office scripting, we printed
to a PDF spooler, imported the PDFs into inDesign and added the document
page number there.

I'm just surprised it's not easier to put a document page number and a
section page number on the same page in whatever version of word you're
using.

Thanks for the advice, though, it was very helpful.
