Adding Overlay Text to a JPEG

I would like to add a text overlay to JPEGs using AppleScript or a Shell Script. Can anyone recommend some good ways to accomplish this? I will be using information in a FileMaker database for the text. I'm guessing that it's possible with an OSAX, a Shell Script and with application scripting.
