Wow, lots of animosity toward CSV on here.

I must agree, however, that parsing CSV is much tricker than it seems,
and that AppleScript is probably not the best tool for the job.  If
you have Office, then scripting Excel is probably the best solution
from an AS point of view.  If not... is AppleWorks/iWork scriptable?

Failing a scriptable app, I would look for a third-party solution - is
there maybe an osax that has csv parsing?  Does the SmileLab
capabilities mentioned provide you the ability to create a script that
does the CSV stuff outside of SmileLab itself?
