Ooops, you can remove this line from the script:
set newext to (do shell script "/bin/bash -c 'echo ${1#\\.}' -- "
& quoted form of newext)
It was a remnant from the older script that prompted for a file
extension and strips off a leading period if it was provided. Since
this script can't get a leading period in the extension the line can
be removed. It does no harm to leave it in, except perhaps to slow the
script down a bit.
