A thousand "Amens" to this sentiment!
For some reason, Unix gurus in particular seem especially prone to dropping cryptic hints at the answer, hints which may mean something to you if you already know a lot about Unix! For the novice, or the person who happens to be working outside his/her main area of expertise, it feels an awful lot like the guru is simply toying with you. (I appreciate that we are all very busy, but for that same reason there are some of us who would be grateful if direct questions could be given direct answers, not just clues, and if you do figure out the answer, please do not continue to keep it a secret! Some of us are trying to learn what we can from this deeply appreciated list. If I need some kind of secret handshake, do please let me know! ;-) )
