For some reason, Unix gurus in particular seem especially prone to dropping cryptic hints at the answer, hints which may mean something to you if you already know a lot about Unix! For the novice, or the person who happens to be working outside his/her main area of expertise, it feels an awful lot like the guru is simply toying with you. 

Would you prefer no answer until a complete full explanation of everything involved in the answer is able to be given with illustrative examples? Sometimes a short answer is all you get because the person who has the knowledge is busy.
