Yeah, the backslash processing is all in the AppleScript compiler.
The runtime input and output of strings is completely separate.  So
testing stuff that does I/O by using string literals is not
necessarily testing what you want to test...

I can read and write text containing all sorts of special characters
OMM, so I don't know why the OP's script would be dropping slashes of
either the forward or backward variety...
