I noted another problem with Illustrator. If an image is embedded, the
'embedded' property is reported as true. But if an image is not embedded,
the 'embedded' property is unavailable. The code below also includes a
workaround for this issue.

Illustrator's dictionary is rather confusing and its documentation rather vague on this point, but from my initial exploration linked bitmaps seem to appear as 'placed items', not 'raster items', which may explain why you're not seeing an 'embedded' property.

Annoyed, but not surprised, to hear that the matrix problem is a bug. Interesting workaround for it. Since our existing artwork uses embedded images throughout I'll probably use my existing kludge for now assuming it holds up okay, but I've kept a note of your solution for future reference.

Many thanks,

Hamish
