This makes me wonder: am I being overly optimistic to think that a script that
uses "do shell script" to call the sips command will be unaffected by this
problem, and continue to work for me when we go to Leopard?

I wrote some stuff using sips under Leopard and it worked fine. I can't say I tested sips extensively, but it did what I asked.

History suggests that the chance of a command-line utility shipping full of
bugs is a lot lower than something designed for scripters.

I have used sips without any problem under Leopard.
