This makes me wonder: am I being overly optimistic to think that a

I wrote some stuff using sips under Leopard and it worked fine. I
can't say
I tested sips extensively, but it did what I asked.
History suggests that the chance of a command-line utility shipping
full of
bugs is a lot lower than something designed for scripters.
I've found a few problems with SIPS.
The intent term "Saturation" is spelled incorrectly and needs to be
typed as "Satuation" -- if you'd ever need it ;-)
SIPS will not honour any intent other than relative if it doesn't like
the B2A2 table in the destination profile. There are no warnings when
this happens so I reported it as a bug (ID# 5633670: SIPS cannot match
images with any intent other than "relative") last year but haven't
seen any follow ups.
