This looks like more justification for allowing duplicate only to local disks. I'm still just thinking about it.

To answer your questions, your experience is similar to mine. I don't AppleScript the process myself. You may have better luck accessing the service through a third party application.

I've had problems with iDisk lately but I'm not quick to blame the service so much as my connection to the internet. When my iDisk is mounted and the Finder exhibits the behavior you show of not being able to be relaunched I kill the following program found by using "ps -ax" in the terminal:
/sbin/mount_webdav -o noautomounted -o browse -a18 -vuserName http://idisk.mac.com/userName /Volumes

After killing the webdav process, sometimes the Finder behaves and sometimes not, but I can get it to relaunch and things are OK from there on. Any files you were in the middle of copying might appear as busy for a while after these actions are taken. I don't know when but the service does change that busy status after a period of time.

I don't care for the Finder's representation of copying files to iDisk. Small files are OK but any larger than a couple of MB act differently than regular Finder copying. For example, copying a TV show to iDisk, the Finder shows a quite impressive copy time by rapidly filling up the status bar. The problem is that then the Finder "closes the file" for a very lengthy amount of time with not progress indicators. I suspect the Finder is allocating the space first and then actually copying the data in.

When I can, I prefer to use Transmit from Panic to access my iDisk. It gives a real world feedback of the transfer status. It also supports AppleScript and Automator.

Hope this helps,
Ian

I have a script that 'duplicates' files from one location to another. For no good reason, I wondered if I could duplicate into a location on my iDisk. Did it work? Well, sort of ...
1. The Finder showed me a progress window as it copied each file, but it was sooooo slooooooooooooooow.
2. My script timed out while waiting.
3. The Finder locked up. Unable to relaunch. Had to do a hardware restart.
4. I looked in the destination folder on my iDisk ... empty!
5. I tried to eject my iDisk, it simply will not eject.
6. Had to do another hardware restart.
OK, so it does NOT work.

Is this typical iDisk behavior? or
Do I need to use another technique?
