Hi Yvan,
Not entirely sure what you mean by "auxiliary" volume here. "David" is the
name of the user's account on another Mac, and it is mounted as a share on
the local Mac as a volume. I expect it to be treated as a volume. It is on
my configuration whether mounting a 10.5.2 user volume on 10.4.11 or vice
versa.

Not sure what this is either... In no case would you see /David/...
What you would see in UNIX was:
/Volumes/David/....
In HFS it should be
David:...
The problem is the path as given (Starting with local startup disk name
("Macintosh HD") cannot be coerced to an alias.
