Oh, give it up, Ed. Ruby had an answer 30 min from posting the
question, and replied to me privately that it worked great, well
before the dissection of my apparently-crappy Perl code. Can't we just
call this "asked and answered" and move on?
I'm all for getting back to talking about AppleScript, but let's do so
on a new subject, rather than rehashing this solved problem.
