Regarding this problem:

If your car made it to 1,000,000 miles, how many times would the number 1 have shown up?


Simple answer : 1.

The "number" 1 only shows up once.

If you mean "the digit 1" it depends whether you mean: "How many of the one million numbers would have at least one "1" digit" or "How many occurrences of the digit "1" would there be in total".

There is a psychological element too. What if a digit qualifies as "showing" only when you're looking at it? Then the question is unanswerable.
